III. Evaluation of a Sentence

1. Is the sentence unified? Does the sentence contain only one idea or contain a single logically developed thought?

2. Is the sentence grammatically complete?

3. Is the sentence coherent?

4. Sentence coherence is violated when faults like the following occur: wrong word order, disagreement between the subject and the predicate verb, disagreement between a determiner and its noun, faulty parallel construction, ambiguous reference of a pronoun, remote or obscure reference, dangling or misplaced modifiers, confusing shifts, mixed constructions, etc.

IV. Evaluation of a Paragraph

1. Is the topic sentence clearly stated?

2. Is the paragraph well developed and organized?

a. Does the paragraph have only one centered idea?

b. Is the topic adequately developed or supported?

c. Is the paragraph unified and coherent?

d. Does the paragraph have continuity or smooth transitions?

3. Does the paragraph contain good sentence structure?

4. Is the word choice effective?

5. Is the paragraph free of errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling?

6. Is the treatment or approach of the subject matter imaginative and thought-provoking?

V. Evaluation of an essay

1. Is the choice of the subject of the composition interesting, significant and suitable according to the requirements of the writing task?

2. Is the composition well organized and developed?

a. Does the opening paragraph have its function? Is the thesis sentence clear and well supported?

b. Does the discussion part of the composition support the purpose of the composition?

c. Is the order or arrangement of the material in the composition suitable and easy to follow?

d. Is the whole composition well proportioned?

e. Is there sufficient use of specific, concrete details to support any generalizations made in the composition?

f. Is each of the paragraphs well organized and developed, and is there continuity between them?

3. Is the word choice effective and does the composition avoid wordiness, floweriness, and roundabout?

4. Is the composition free of errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, sentence construction, and so forth?

5. Does the composition as a whole reflect thought? Is it both logical and imaginative?
